This book helps you plan your next reading year, if you prefer short novels. It’s a guide to the best short novels of all time, defined as being under 200 pages. The guide suggests 58 short books - one for each week of the year, plus a few bonus choices. Book suggestions run the gamut from classic 1900s fiction like “The Great Gatsby” and “Mrs Dalloway” to diverse modern selections from Sandra Cisneros, with some detective fiction, magical realism, fantasy and science fiction. Authors include James Joyce, Albert Camus, George Orwell, Toni Morrison, Margaret Atwood, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Shirley Jackson.
Each entry offers the book’s first lines, a plot summary, info about the author, and a section on why you should read it. This is followed by a “What to read next” suggestion from the same author, before moving on to the next recommended book.
