Michael Rasmussen was leading the 2007 Tour de France after Stage 16 by more than three minutes but was removed from the race by his team due to a whereabouts scandal, with no mountain stages remaining. Rasmussen began his career as a mountain biker, winning world championships before transitioning to road cycling, where he became one of the strongest Grand Tour riders and climbers of the 2000s.
