Today I welcome an old mentor of mine (of sorts), Ken Lynch to the show.
One of my roles at NZF was the HPAD (High Performance Athlete Development) Manager, where I reported into Ken, in his role at HPSNZ as the National HPAD Manager.
Before his time in NZ, Ken worked at the Ireland Institute of Sport Head as well as the Olympic Team Manager for Triathlon Ireland at the London Olympics.
Ken has since moved across the ditch and is now the National Performance Pathway Manager for Australian Sailing.
Unlike a traditional guest of the pod, Ken offers a unique insight across the systems, pathways and components of our “transitioning athlete”, which is really another way of saying the HPAD space.
Administrator / Coach:
o Ireland Institute of Sport - Personal Performance & Head of Talent Development
• Olympic Team Manager London Olympics (Triathlon Ireland)
o HPSNZ – HPAD National Manager
• 2013-2020
o Australian Sailing - National Performance Pathway Manager 2020 – Present
o AIS Consultant – Elevate Lead – Athlete and Coach Development streams
Chapters -
1:10 Gareth & Ken’s origin story & defining HPAD
6:14 Team vs Individual Sports
8:20 The Irish Olympic experience
11:00 High Performance Sport NZ
22:20 How to do a GAP analysis
25:50 Key components of a HPAD system
36:50 Advice to HPAD athletes
45:40 Coaches at HPAD level need to be getting this right
57:40 Things parents of HPAD athletes can do more of this
1:24:54 Rapid Fire Questions
