A strategy to stop shoplifters at a local Safeway is under scrutiny by the city of Seattle, which issued a notice of violation due to an entryway that is kept closed to prevent theft.

The Safeway at 8340 15th Ave NW in Seattle's Crown Hill neighborhood has endured a long struggle with shoplifters.

In a recent move, the grocery store opted to close one of its two entrances to give these thieves one less escape route.

“I have seen people just blatantly carry stuff out," said Gretchen, a long-time shopper who didn’t want her last name used. “They have to fight it somehow. It's been such an egregious problem for so long that I don't know that they have a lot of options."

Plummeting property values in downtown Portland are costing the city millions of dollars in tax revenue that would otherwise go to vital city services, as the city looks at a $92.8-million budget shortfall in the upcoming fiscal year. The turndown in revenue is putting pressure on city leaders to re-imagine a downtown once filled with workers. Perhaps no one is feeling the pinch like downtown restaurants and small businesses.…

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie announced on Monday a plan he says will transform the way the city approaches the homelessness and behavioral health crisis. His executive directive provides the most comprehensive plan to date about how the mayor's team will use those tools and a timeline for accomplishing specific goals. The executive action, called "Breaking the Cycle," expands on Lurie's fentanyl ordinance that gives his office new powers for addressing the city's drug epidemic. The Board of Supervisors passed the ordinance 10-1 last month, temporarily relinquishing some of their oversight powers for the city's contracts and lease agreements related to the issues of homelessness, mental health and drugs.…

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is asking for another $2.8 billion loan to keep Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid plan, afloat after asking for $3.44 billion last week to cover a program that has expanded to include illegal aliens for free. As Breitbart News reported in 2022: “Beginning January 1, 2024, illegal aliens residing in California will become eligible for taxpayer-funded health insurance — the first state in the nation to enact such a policy.”…

California's top insurance regulator on Friday said he would approve an emergency request by State Farm to raise premiums 22% on home insurance for about a million customers if the insurance giant could justify the hike at a public hearing. State Farm, the state's largest insurer with roughly 1 million home insurance policies in California, said the emergency rate would help the company rebuild its capital following the Los Angeles wildfires that destroyed more than 16,000 buildings, mostly homes. The company is trying to prevent a "dire" financial situation that executives said could push homeowners into the state's last-resort insurance option. California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara said that other California insurers won't be able to absorb State Farm's customers if the insurance giant stops doing business in California, but that he wanted more data on how the company manages its finances and calculates risks. He asked the company to present its argument publicly on April 8 to a judge, who will then give a proposed decision. Lara will then make a final decision. "State Farm claims it is committed to its California customers and aims to restore financial stability. I expect both State Farm and its parent company to meet their responsibilities and not shift the burden entirely onto their customers," Lara said in a statement. "The facts will be revealed in an open, transparent hearing."…

This gender identity left them shell-shocked. A member of a state panel advising the director of Oregon’s Health Authority (OHA) made a wild first impression at a meeting by proclaiming, “I use they, them and turtle for my pronouns.” JD Holt, who also goes by “JD Terrapin” on Facebook, made the declaration with a straight face while introducing themself at a virtual council meeting on Dec. 20. “Hello everybody, it’s JD. I use they, them and turtle for my pronouns. I’m in the Springfield-Eugene area and I get to be part of the council,” Holt said enthusiastically.…

Former State Farm Vice President Haden Kirkpatrick was fired by the insurance giant this week after he was recorded during a Tinder date in January speaking about the company's premium hikes in response to the California wildfires. He was recorded undercover saying that the California subsidiary's request for a premium rate hike was 'kind of' orchestrated 'but not in the way you would think.' "Our people look at this and say, 'S---, we've got like maybe $5 billion that we're short if something happens.' We'll go to the Department of Insurance and say, 'We're overexposed here, you have to let us catch up our [rates].'... He'll say 'Nah.' And we'll say, 'OK, then we are going to cancel these policies,'" Kirkpatrick had said.…

On Monday, Portland State University was among 60 universities under investigation for antisemitic discrimination and harassment by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights. The warning issued by Secretary of Education Linda McMahon says schools like PSU could receive potential enforcement actions if they do not fulfill their obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to protect Jewish students on campus, including uninterrupted access to campus facilities and educational opportunities. “The Department is deeply disappointed that Jewish students studying on elite U.S. campuses continue to fear for their safety amid the relentless antisemitic eruptions that have severely disrupted campus life for more than a year. University leaders must do better,” said McMahon. “U.S. colleges and universities benefit from enormous public investments funded by U.S. taxpayers. That support is a privilege, and it is contingent on scrupulous adherence to federal anti-discrimination laws.”…

These are the worst — and wokest — judges in New York City when it comes to protecting the public from violent suspects. These criminal court jurists set violent offenders loose ahead of trial at an astounding rate — with some springing alleged perps more than 80% of the time, according to a Post analysis of pretrial detention data from the Office of Court Administration. The analysis looked at 96 judges who handled a minimum of 25 cases in the first six months of 2024 where the top charge at arraignment was a violent felony. Nearly all such cases are still bail-eligible, even after radical criminal-justice reforms were enacted by Albany lawmakers in 2019. One of the city’s most egregious practitioners of this junk justice is Queens Criminal Court Judge Wanda Licitra, who only set bail five times and had no suspects held in pretrial detention in 34 violent felony cases spanning January to June 2024, the latest available data.…

Protest have increasingly become a tool not merely for expressing dissent but for exerting coercive pressure upon individuals who diverge from prevailing ideological orthodoxies. Recent organized attacks on Tesla dealerships across the nation provide a troubling illustration of this trend, with explicit efforts aimed at intimidating Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk into abandoning his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).…

The luxury Ritz-Carlton Hotel in downtown Portland, Oregon may be in trouble after less than just two years of operation. Ready Capital, the lender to real estate group that owns the hotel announced a bleak future for the Ritz-Carlton in a report detailing the corporation's fourth-quarter earnings. 'The fourth quarter closes out a year of mixed results,' CEO Thomas Capasse wrote in a press release. 'On one hand, our Small Business Lending segment performed well, with significant origination growth reflecting the benefits of past investments. 'Meanwhile, our multi-family lending focused business faced challenges from higher rates, inflationary pressures, and lower rent growth.' The Ritz Carlton was an underperforming property in the group's investment portfolio, failing to earn revenue comparable to the average for all Ritz-Carlton hotels. The hotel's building, Block 216, was bought by real estate developer Walter Bowen in 2019 and opened in 2023. The 35-story tower boasted luxury rooms starting at $500 a night and featured 132 condominiums.…

By the time California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law the $20 minimum wage for fast food workers, he had been warned by many that it would be devastating for the industry, but he did it anyway. Now, 16,000 fast food jobs have been lost and fast food prices are up more than 14.5%. And here is why: the $20 minimum wage harms California’s least skilled and least experienced workers, as they are no more productive, but are significantly more expensive, and results in harms the business owners as well. This week, new data released from the new Bureau of Labor Statistics Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) shows that California has now lost as many as 16,000 fast food jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages includes mandatory reports from industry employers. The Employment Policies Institute reminds us that “this dataset is the gold standard for economists, and has been lauded by even Newsom’s favorite economists as the best on-the-ground look at a sector’s economic situation.”…

After 23 years in downtown Seattle, the Cheesecake Factory will close the doors of its busy location. The decision was made after “extensive review and analysis,” according to a spokesperson for the restaurant. The last day the restaurant at 700 Pike St. will be open is May 4. "We have truly enjoyed being a part of the downtown Seattle community over the last 23 years and hope to continue to serve all our Seattle guests at our nearby restaurant locations." -- Spokesperson Alethea Rowe…

On Thursday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Ingraham Angle,” “Alex Marlow Show” host and Breitbart Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow talked about California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) stating that biological men shouldn’t play women’s sports and said that Newsom is just trying to pivot away from his left-wing record in California. Marlow stated that Newsom is “pivoting from the worst moments of his horrible tenure as my Governor, starting with the trans stuff, where California’s been at the forefront of the gender experimentation on children.”…

The California Legislative Analyst’s Office says the state has spent $37 billion on homelessness since 2019 and undercounts the homeless. It also urges delaying one of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s key programs until data proves its effectiveness. A 2023 UC San Francisco report found 34% of homeless individuals in California are not from California, meaning state taxpayers may have covered $12.6 billion since 2019 on homeless spending for individuals from other states or nations. “A long-standing way that California and the rest of the United States have estimated the number of people experiencing homelessness is through a point-in-time count,” wrote the LAO. “Since the count is only a snapshot of people experiencing homelessness on one given night in a year (typically in late January) and those conducting the count may miss individuals who are hidden from view at the time (such as people sleeping in a secluded area), the homelessness data collected is an undercount.”…

Prosecutors have filed charges against a Seattle driver who is accused of running over and killing a man after he hit the driver's truck with a machete during a dispute last week. Patrick Fashaun Williams, 35, faces one felony count of hit-and-run involving death for the February 28 crash that killed Amani Wheaton. Charging documents reveal more about a parking lot dispute between Williams and Wheaton outside a hotel near North 137th St. and Aurora Ave. N. According to police, multiple witnesses called 911 around 5:45 p.m. to report a man was lying in the middle of the road and appeared to have been run over by a car. Another witness told investigators he heard the sound of tires screeching before seeing the man on the ground.…
