Alaska’s minimum wage workers will see two pay raises in 2024, starting with an 18-cent increase to $11.91 per hour on January 1. A more significant boost follows on July 1, raising the rate to $13 an hour as part of a new ballot measure approved this year.
The measure also establishes future increases: $14 in 2026, $15 in 2027, and adjustments for inflation thereafter.
Juneau’s downtown will come alive for the annual Gallery Walk on Friday, December 6, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nearly 50 locations will host pop-up artist exhibits, live performances, and seasonal activities.
In Alaska’s remote communities, where grocery trips often involve snowmobiles or small planes, Esther Keim is spreading holiday cheer with her Thanksgiving turkey airlift.
Keim grew up on a remote homestead where similar efforts brightened her family’s holidays. This year, she delivered 32 turkeys to cabins up to 100 miles from Anchorage, inspired by stories of families with limited holiday meals.
Mike Sfraga, an Alaskan geographer and the first-ever U.S. Arctic Ambassador-at-Large, may face uncertainty in his role under the incoming administration. Appointed by President Joe Biden and confirmed after a year of Senate deliberations, Sfraga's tenure might end with the typical resignation of politically appointed ambassadors during presidential transitions.
It's Black Friday...which means a whole lot of people are spending a whole lot of money
