I really only like Gaming on mobile devices when I have a physical joystick attached to the phone. So when I checked out the ELO Vagabond—a compact joystick designed for smartphones and small tablets – I was excited.
While there are countless mobile gaming accessories on the market, the ELO Vagabond stands out for its compatibility, unique design, and straightforward setup, giving players a console-like feel on devices they already own.
About the ELO Vagabond Gaming Joystick
Unboxing and Setup
Unboxing experience is fun, and easy, since the box can also double as a spot to keep it when you’re not gaming. You’ll want to keep it, because inside are adapters for various phone models, including the iPhone 15, iPhone 16, Samsung and other Android devices, iPad mini, and more.
A handy guide is also included to direct you to which insert you will most likely need.
And unlike many mobile controllers, the Vagabond supports use with certain phone cases on. This also means people with wallets on the phone, or Pop-sockets will be able to put the device in.
Key Features
- USB-C Connection: The flexible USB-C connection allows ELO Vagabond to connect to Phones. The only con to this, because inserting the USB can be a bit of a challenge.
- Comfort and Control: The Vagabond’s layout includes a left and right joystick, a responsive D-pad, and ABXY buttons. While the controller lacks button illumination for ABXY, the overall feel of the joysticks and triggers is satisfying.
- Adaptability and Software: Paired with ELO’s “Unleashed” software portal, the Vagabond provides access to compatible games. The app also supports calibration and button mapping for personalized control.
Performance in Real-World Testing
Testing on various devices, including an iPhone 16 and an ASUS ZenFone 7, revealed impressive performance for gamers. The joystick stretches up to 8 inches, so iPad minis will be easy to connect.
What About Kindle?
Unfortunately, although the Amazon Kindle 7 fits really well into the Vagabond, the Unleashed software is not available (as of this posting) on either the Amazon app store, or the side-loaded Google Play store. The joystick does light up on USB-C, but not recognized on the device for gaming.
What We Like
- Convenient portability and adaptable design
- Supports playing with a phone case
- Responsive joystick and button layout
What Could Be Better
- Lack of button illumination
- Limited compatibility with older iPhones using Lightning ports
- Game settings don’t transfer when switching devices
Conclusion The ELO Vagabond is a solid choice for gamers who want to step up their mobile gaming experience. With its portable design, reliable control, and useful software, it’s an excellent companion for gamers on the go. If you’re serious about mobile gaming, the Vagabond might just become your new favorite gadget.
