True Crime: The Duke Lacrosse Case and the Consequences of a False Rape Allegation
Manage episode 455347891 series 3618948
In 2006, Crystal Mangum, a Black student and exotic dancer, accused three white Duke lacrosse players of raping her at a party where she had been hired to perform. The case quickly became a national flashpoint, sparking intense debates about race, class, and privilege. The accused players—Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty, and David Evans—were indicted but steadfastly maintained their innocence. The case began to unravel when DNA evidence failed to link the players to Mangum, and it was revealed that the prosecutor had suppressed critical evidence. In 2007, the charges were dropped, the players were exonerated, and the prosecutor was disbarred. Mangum, who is now incarcerated for a 2013 murder conviction, later admitted to fabricating the rape allegations and has publicly sought forgiveness from the men she wrongfully accused.
