I dunno, i felt like doing a Crusader Picture. also, im tired of Seeing Crusaders using only Swords and Shields, Pole Weapons are badass. and also, just to be clear, he is indeed a Knights Hospitaller.

You really have great helmet design when it comes to accommodating for anthro anatomy; it looks awesome and it is still recognizable as accurate, or at least thematic to what you're trying to capture. I second you when you say you're tired of sword and shield as well - not a lot of variety when it comes to art of these guys, it seems. I'm a big fan of maces personally, I think they don't get enough spotlight, as they are indeed really cool (and particularly brutal) weapons. : )

thank you very much, i appreciate your comment. i believe i learned from lindybeige that the helmet is of french origin, and was quite popular. sometimes they would not have the faceplate and would have only the top cap. the problem he said with them is the flat top design wasn't very good at deflecting blows, and a crushing blow from above could seriously injure the spine or neck, so they eventually went back to the Nose helmet shape. I still think it looks very good, and in my opinion quite iconic of the Crusades.
and honestly, ive always thought of swords as a backup secondary weapon that not all carried. Primary weapons of battle were often Pole Weapons, and for good reason. honestly in a battle i would rather have my opponent never reach close quarters level, and if they did it was often done holding father up on the shaft closer to the spearhead and using it as a makeshift dagger (or even removing the spearhead to use as a dagger). in my opinion, anyday bring a spear over a Sword, especially a spear with Wings.

You watch Lindybeige too? I love his videos - never have I seen a man so knowledgeable of history that wears dorky sweaters as nicely as he does. Really great stuff he has. c:

What with there being very little angle for actual deflection to take place, you'd be getting all of the arrow/bolt's force concentrated on a single place, seeing as it's almost completely flat.
A random note, but something I'd be curious to see - do you think you'd be interested in drawing a Frankish warrior from 350-500? Clovis and his lot really knew how to dress. c:

Sadly I don't have any means to commission at the moment - while I have the money, I don't have a paypal or anything of that sort that would allow me to actually transfer the money. :P

Ah, the Knights Hospitaller. Too ofter are hey over shadowed by the Templars. People often foget that these were the origional warrior monks. We need a repeat of the crusades if you ask me. A 6th crusade if you will. Also I agree that polearms arn't given as much recognition that they deserve a most swords are rubbish agaist armoured foes, a halberd or spear would penatrate a Knights armour with ease. Mind you, a war axe or broadsword would work just aswell I suppose.
Bah, for all we know that could just be rumours spread by the sarecans. Anyway the Muslims have broken the treatie created at the end of the crusades stating all religeons shall be free to worship within Jerusalem. They've now all but kicked out the Christians & Jews. If they can't be there peacefully then they shouldn't be there at all. Besides, if we were to re-claim the Holy Land, & possibly re-take Byzantany, then perhaps Isis & the Taliban & other extreamist forces would be to afraid to continue the Islamification of Europe.
